The Tower of London

Chapel of St John

In 2018 we completed two projects for Historic Royal Palaces which utlilise the magic of Chris Wormell's linocuts. At the core of the Tower of London, William the Conqueror's personal Chapel of St John remains a place of worship today. Inspired by the liturgical tradition of the Stations of the Cross, we commissioned Chris to execute a series of eight linocuts depicting significant events from the history of the chapel, to be screen printed to vellum panels, inset into oak storage coffers. The central narrative is carried on a four-sided lectern with texts in 11 languages. The coffers and lectern were elements in a suite of furniture designed and made by Luke Hughes.

At Hampton Court Palace, the Tudor kitchens and wine cellar have a new layer of interpretation depicting the staff preparing a banquet for the royal household. Chris's linocuts were enlarged to life size and hand painted to the venerable walls by Jackie Brooks. A cast of 12 characters, including butcher, head chef, skivvies, porters and cellarers, complete with a cornucopia of ingredients, is accompanied by printed Ordinances which govern their working lives.
